Oladeojobi, a reverend and the principal of Ajuwon Senior High School, Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State,, was said to have on December 10 invited a nurse to the school to carry out virginity tests on a group of 10 students.
The principal, who the pupils described as a strict disciplinarian, did not seek the consent of the parents/guardians of the students or that of the students before conducting the test.
During the test, it was alleged that the principal and the nurse whose name could not be ascertained dipped their fingers into the pupils’ private part.
But the matter got out of hand when one of the pupils started bleeding after she had been ‘tested.’
Parents of the pupils later stormed the school in protest resulting in the invitation of policemen from Ajuwon Division.
The Divisional Police Officer, Ajuwon Division, Mr. Waheed Yusuf, had on Tuesday confirmed that Oladeojobi was quizzed last week Thursday and Friday.
A police source said she confessed to carrying out the test, saying ‘she was trying to help them.’ culled from the Punch.
In this day, time and age I ask myself why should a School Principal, who should be the most educated and most enlightened person within the school premises stoops so low as to be compared to a fool and what more can we expect from our educational system? I bet parents will not take it likely and the scars she has left on those girls will forever remain with them.
I will like to state specifically here that young people sexual and reproductive health rights are a human rights…so if a virginity test was conducted on them, then their rights have been infringed upon by that irresponsible Principal. I would like to state here that;
Those young girls have the right to be growing safely into adulthood, and gradually becoming sexual human beings according to their maturity.
They have the right to make their own decisions about matters related to reproduction and sexuality.
They also have the right to avoidsexual cohesion, incest, rape and trafficking. They should access means that can increase sexual safety, to choose to marry or not to marry whom they want, and to plan a family in the future. They have a right to information.
This crazy act may be happening in some other schools and the students may be threatened not to disclose to anyone. Parents should talk to their children and also encourage their children to do same. And if such happens, please report to the authorities; education board, lawyers and the police.
