I know and I am very sure that I am not the only one with bad experiences when it has to do with tailors because my sister has had her own share, my mum too and some friends have also shared their experiences. I love the look of a well sewn Ankara or lace dress or skirt and blouse but seriuosly speaking I can’t boast of any good one that makes me look just GOOD. …….I don’t want to look like Beyonce or Mercy Johnson, I just want to look like Jayne. It’s either the shoulders keep falling….I call it “off shore” and when it’s on the shoulders I call it “on shore” or that the empire waistline comes down to the tommy area or is it when the bust line is too big and someone standing beside you at an event, when you are sitting down can see the whole of your breast!. Hmmm. I have them all and more.
I have had days when I go to pick up my clothes from the tailor and I ask “do you know how much I bought this fabric?” or when you choose a style from a magazine and the tailor sews something different, Infact exact opposite of what you indicated as your choice…….It has happened to me ten times plus more. One day, I had to sit down and I asked myself (and God) if someone swore at me that I would never wear a good looking Ankara dress, because there are times when the pastor preaches and he mentions “anybody that says you will not wear that beautiful dress, you should cancel it with faith”. And so that day, I cancelled it in faith and later I went to look for a Tailor at the popular Jabi area of Abuja.
I met this Lady who sells fabrics and I asked her for a very good tailor……and she she took me to a guy. At first sight, he looked hardworking, he was really working hard on the dress he was making and I thought to myself…….maybe he would put this kind of effort into mine too. I sat down, he gave me a magazine, I choose the styles I wanted, he was to make three lovely simple gowns for me. We discussed prices, paid him some money and I left after we had exchanged numbers.
One week later I called and he told me he had started the sewing but had not finished, three days after that, I decided to pay him a visit, On getting there his shop was locked and I asked his neighbour and she told me his sewing machine was seized by some Army officers and his colleague arrested because they spoilt a customer’s wedding dress. Ewwwoooooo! I shouted like someone put pepper in my anus. She didn’t stop there, she told me that the tailor got drunk that same day because he was so upset. Yeeepaaaa!. I thanked her and left.
About a week later, I called his number and he told me he had finished sewing the clothes and I should meet him at Wuse to collect it. He described the place and I proceeded to the place. I met him….guys, he was smelling of alcohol. I requested to have the clothes immediately and he brought them out from out a bag that was lying on the floor……I don die ooooh, chei!, what did I do or not do to deserve this?………I whispered to myself and then I looked at the clothes he cut the fabric in a “figure eight” shape and stitched it together and he used a nylon bag as linen. I didn’t know what to say or do. His eyes were red and itching to collect the money.
“Oga, see you didn’t weave the sleeves, please do it quickly I will come back to pick it up”…….actually, he didn’t finish up so I used that as an excuse, he was reluctant but before he could say ‘jACK rOBINSON’ I ran away quickly and I never turned back.
I have decided to join the Ramadan fasting and prayers and I call all of you who are experiencing the same problem to join me. Let’s pray for Tailors, Seamstresses etc or whatever they call them. Please send your name and phone number to my email address. The God of sewing A.K.A The God of Tailoring is going to do a new thing in our lives…….say Amen!.
Please note: Pastor just announced that there will be anointing oil at the prayer ground, for you to rub your tailors before they sew your clothes. See you there!.
