The Optimist’s Guide to moving from Goal Setting to Goal Getting

If you work in the development sector, you should be used to attending meetings. The meetings are usually attended by relevant stakeholders and could take place in hours or in days. Such meetings are usually strategic planning meetings, work plan development meetings, proposal development meetings and so on. These kind of meetings help the persons involved to understand key terms; how, why, where, when and what of what they seek to achieve. Key discussions, agreements and next steps are usually well documented and disseminated at a later time.

Over the years, these actions have moulded my perceptions and actions as a wife, mom, entrepreneur and a career driven woman. This means that I regularly have to plan and review from time to time, my schedule of activities, action plans, short term goals and deliverables, announce and share my plans with close friends and family. One thing for sure is that I never forget to celebrate my achievements and I always look forward to my ‘me time’.

Goal setting is usually the first thing towards the change you want to see and writing it down is the best thing that can ever happen. Be thorough when visualising your goals and do not fear failure. Embrace your fears, have dreams and make all the moves to turn them into reality. Moving from goal setting to goal getting is not usually a one size fits all kind of move or precise step by step movement. The following tips should give you an idea on what the movement entails.

Getting out of your comfort zone is key! You’ll never know what’s out there until you let go and find it yourself. Push yourself; never give up even when the going is tough. Make a list of what you really want to achieve. Go through the list every morning and let it motivate you. Set your priorities, identify what needs to wait and what can’t.

Step up and take initiative especially when you have a partnership or you are working with someone to deliver. Be hands on. Make sure you know what you do inside out. Keep an open mind to opinions or new ideas. Accept challenges as they come, see them as opportunities. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.Be humble! listen and learn from others. Respect and treat others equally.

More importantly, do not compromise your values, stand up for your beliefs and know your limits. It is also essential that you build your network because knowing more people that understand what you do will help you on the long run.

Above all, love what you do. If you do, chances are that you’ll do it for a long time. Have your family and close friends with you on your journey and to share successes with.
