I am a mom of two children age nine and seven who are picky and myself who is extremely picky as I do not hide it at all. People who know me say I am very picky and careful with what I eat and drink and so with the kids being picky, the apple did not fall far from the tree. Lol.
Today, I will be discussing strategies for the fussy and picky eaters. The fussy and picky eating phase is very normal especially from the time of introducing complementary foods till they are teens and maybe adults. Food jags are normal! That is when they enjoy a meal one day and the next day the absolutely hate the food. Kids can be really mean right? After sweating it up in the kitchen, they just deny you and the food.
Here are my five tips on how to manage fussy and picky eaters
- Involving children in food preparation by taking them shopping with you, letting them help you in the kitchen (age appropriate) and allowing them to join you in meal preparation.
- Leading by example: At meal times, everyone including you have the same foods on their plates. If they see you are eating the same thing as them, they are more likely to eat.
- Parents must be able to choose what is served, how much is served and when it is served and the child chooses how much he/she can eat out of it. Parents should feel comfortable knowing that he/she has provided a healthy and complete meal.
- Serving small portions is very important. when you serve an overwhelming portion of food, it looks intimidating to the child and the child will loose interest. small portions are ideal and they can always ask for more.
- Great and healthy snacks: kids love snacks and offering them healthy snacks is a great way to offer high nutrient food. It is best to offer certain fruits and vegetables that the child could not eat during meal time as snacks. As much as possible avoid high calorie drinks and
