If you were a fruit, spice or veggie, what would you be?
I love spices! I think I am a huge spice girl because I can’t eat a no spicy food. In boarding school, I remember mixing up some spices and taking to school because the food usually were tasteless and adding homemade mixed spices would definitely make it tasty and fit to eat.
Over the years, I have learnt how to incorporate spices especially locally made spices into the meals I cook for my family. Cinnamon, turmeric, garlic, ginger, ogiri (Dadawa), thyme, curry and so on are just some the variety of spices that are always in my kitchen. Spices make food taste better and you get more satisfaction compared to eating food that is bland.
For vegetables and fruits, I love peppers, spinach, cucumber, garden eggs and scent leaves, pineapples, berries.
I think I am in love with pepper. Infact I love pepper! Food without pepper is incomplete and would just be bland; tasteless. Pepper is a fruit and forgive me I used to think it was a spice until some days ago.
Spices and vegetables have superb health benefits. Adding certain spices to foods can help bring blood pressure rates down. For example, the spice cardamom is found to reduce blood pressure and improve antioxidant status and cinnamon can potentially fight diabetes. The antioxidants in cinnamon are linked to lower inflammation, as well as reductions in blood glucose concentrations in people with diabetes.
And for weight watchers like me, spices can help you control the amount of food you eat and then your weight. When I eat bland food, I don’t get full. I might eat twice as much as I eat on a good day but when I eat spicy food I eat just a little amount of food and then I am full.
Spices like ginger and turmeric, can serve as preventative and treatment agents for managing heart diseases. Ginger’s anti-inflammatory makeup is useful in fighting heart disease, and studies show turmeric can help counteract conditions like cystic fibrosis and other lung diseases, and even muscle injuries.
I think that a generous amount of spice in our food enriches the heart, soul, mind and body. Eat spice in whatever colour, shape or size and be happy.
And for veggies, steam, stir fry or eat fresh raw can make a huge difference to your health and body mechanism.
Be spicy! love veggies!
Ciao!
