Can you really see what I am seeing? Its like the government of the people is not the government for the people at all. The much awaited 2017 budget has just been released and health is still getting peanuts.
It is really sad and disheartening that Nigeria’s priorities are still underfunded and clearly left unattended. Look at the increasing rate of malnutrition, polio, NCDs and diarrhoea and the 2017 budget is allocating just 50 billion naira for health….This also shows that the National Health Act was not taken into consideration in budget allocation for health. The rates of stunting is very high, severe acute malnutrition has turned Nigeria into a laughing stock and no one can really see the big picture that the poor outcome of our students in exams and later as graduates…if they ever become…is clearly linked to the level of malnutrition smiling and dancing in our land.
No one is seeing nutrition as an investment with economic benefit on the long run. If a country decides to put more money in the health and nutrition of its citizens then the future of millions of children and their mothers is secured. There is no development without women and young people are the future of tomorrow.
Hopefully the National Assembly will take seriously the allocations for health and make changes where necessary for the security of the future of our children born and unborn.
Cheers!!!
