This year, we planted some corn, fluted pumpkins, okro, scent leaves and spinach in the home garden and they did well. The corn did so well, very healthy and were really yellow and fresh.
I did use some for beans and corn porridge and had to boil some for the family. We had a big debate whether we should eat the corn with coconut or pear (the local pear) and the local pear won. When I prepare pear, as a city girl I would rather put the washed pears in a bowl of hot water but my husband would rather roast the pears in a frying pan (village boy style).
To be sincere, the roasted pear is more delicious and very tasty. You just need to try it to believe me. To make roasted pears at home, put pears in a dry frying pan and toss lightly reduce the flame and keep tossing until all the sides are soft and slightly burnt.
I want to be better advocate so I am reading Hajiya Bilikisu’s book; “For social Justice and Gender Equity” while eating my corn and roasted pear. There is so much to learn from her work and the development sector. I think this book is a great book and will always be on my shelf.
Ciao!
