On Tuesday afternoon, after I was done with the marathon tweets on Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and YES! those were my first series of tweets to launch the campaign on #crazyaboutnutrition I was deeply in engaged in my thoughts on how to engage more women on health using social media. Like the Bible says, ‘My people perish for lack of knowledge’, there is so much information out there including my blog) on health and living a healthy lifestyle that women are not accessing either because they don’t know that such information exists or that they find it difficult getting the right information….Can they trust this source? I think they should!
And even though some studies have shown that more men than women have access to social media, it is also right to say social media can be used to engage women in health conversations as compared to other means of communication. There are 3 tips I would be sharing on engaging women on health and they are;
Social media campaign must address women’s needs differently from men’s
I am on the Facebook group of about 20,000 women and mennn! There are discussions of all sorts going on there. From sex to abuse and to relationships; women pouring out their hearts, thoughts and their all on social media…….there are no secrets but what happens in there stays there. The trick about how the group has managed thus far is that trust and privacy is emphasised within the group. To engage women on social media, you’ll need them to trust you. and maintain privacy.
What do they want? Credible information and intelligent conversations
Women look for information especially health related information online for themselves, family members and friends. To fit their needs, it is important that the information they find is credible, reliable, authentic and accurate backed up with professional medical perspectives….women are getting smarter!
Means of sending out information is key! SMS is king.
Women have access to mobile phones more than ever before in history. Smart phones or not, information is being carried out and received by the users of the phone and with smart phones apps are being developed to fit the needs of these women but SMS is still very important in reaching out due to the fact that it has a wider reach.
Let’s talk! how do you think we can engage more women on health?
