ALERT!!! Latest campaign in town. Nine female musicians from seven African countries have come together on a new song calling for women and girls to be central to the fight against poverty. In a shift from previous anti-poverty music campaigns that have been criticized for ignoring African musicians and misrepresenting the continent, the video from the ONE campaign features an all African cast of some of the continent’s brightest stars.
The song is part of ONE’s poverty is sexist campaign, which calls for targeted investments to overcome the barriers that disproportionately affect women, not least in health and education. Investments in health and education and economic empowerments can help remove the barriers that prevent so many girls and women from leading health and productive lives. Giving women the power and tools they need to improve their lives and take hold of equal opportunities means they can become catalysts to help end poverty.
The song “Strong Girl” features Kenya’s strong girl, Victoria Kimani, Vanessa Mdee, from Tanzania, Arielle T, from Gabon, Gabriela, from Mozambique, Judith Sephuma and Blessing, (who is 14 years old) from South Africa, Selmor Mtukudzi, from Zimbabwe, Yemi Alade and Waje from Nigeria.
The campaign was launched in Lagos, Nigeria on May 22, 2015 by ONE Campaign in partnership with Save the Children and ACTION 2015. To support the campaign take a selfie of you flexing your arm and post with the harshtag; #strengthie to show solidarity for the cause.
