As parents who really care about the health of every member of the family and want to prepare healthy and nutritious meals for our children and family, it is important that we make family meals as balanced as possible. Eating the right food at the right time not only impacts on our lives individually or as a group but also improves our entire being….Intellectual capabilities and productivity.
According to the Federal Ministry of Health, the 4-star meal plan shows a daily meal of breakfast, lunch, dinner as well as mid –morning , mid-afternoon or mid-evening snacks ( In-between meals) consumed by any member of the family, particularly children under 5 years that provides all the essential nutrients needed to survive, grow and develop the individual to full potential.
The servings at each meal time must contain nutrients supplied from the following four major food groups:
1) Cereals, starchy Roots, Tubers and Plantains [Maize, wheat, sorghum, millet, etc. Yam, cassava, cocoyam, Plantain)
2) Animal protein sources [milk, egg, fish of all types, meat of all types, poultry, snail group etc.]
3) Vegetable protein sources [Beans of all types, Nuts of all types etc.]
4) Fruits & vegetable sources [ fruits of varied colours, leafy & non-leafy vegetables of all colours
Note: All fats & oils are not grouped because most of the 4-star groups are excellent sources of fats & oils. Moreover, most of our meals are added some oils/fats while cooking. Water is still not grouped because, potable water is compulsorily utilized while cooking & eating etc.
