We may be an annoyingly patriarchal society……..yes, very, very annoying, but it seems that we have gone all out lately to celebrate women and mothers in particular. We all notice that whenever it mother’s day, we witness shops, supermarkets, shopping malls decked with promotional campaigns and television screens flooded with special songs (sing along….sweet mother, I no go forget you for the suffer wey you suffer for me…..) to honour mothers. Corporations and organisations create adverts globally crowning themselves as a ‘Proud Sponsor of Moms’. Yet, with Father’s Day approaching, the media and malls seem strangely quiet and empty. When it comes to celebrating the other half responsible for human existence, why is there such an obvious disparity?

Well several times, I have tried to answer that question and also asked several people but all the answers are not sufficient. I know we all have this “greater attachment” to our mothers but why do we just forget “Father’s Day”…no flowers, no songs dedicated to them…heeeheeee…..absolutely nothing!. I hope our fathers don’t carry placards one day asking for father’s day to be a public holiday and to be taken more seriously…..lol.
I have been seriously thinking, maybe the world will be a better place if we take father’s seriously…like reminding them of their role as fathers, bread winners, decision makers etc. both parents are important because anyone one will feel incomplete without either of them….that’s true.
I remember years ago before I got married, I had a silly argument with my mom and I told her that I would very much prefer my dad to be around me when I have my child. And to my surprise years later, while I was in labour I had my dad beside me (coincidentally, he got transferred to the state I was in) praying for me, talking to me, sharing my pains…because his eyes were red..heeeeheeee….. and when the baby came out….he held the baby… and I could see Joy…..I really can’t explain it, but he was overwhelmed with Joy.
I love my Father. I may not buy him his dream car, but I will always make him happy!.He deserves the best for giving me life!. Happy Father’s Day and I love you.
