JUWURA AMOO-ONIDUNDU: Another true story of death after childbirth

This is another story, the kind of story no one wants to hear, experience and believe. It is a true life story of another mother lost after child birth. It is a painful story that needs to be shared and lessons learnt. It is a story of Mrs Juwura Amoo Onidundu. Here is the story, culled from This Day.

The late Mrs. Juwura was born into a family of seven children where four of her siblings are medical doctors. It was indeed an irony that whilst her siblings were away saving lives, her life was in the hands of doctors who could not save it.

According to the reporter, Juwura after her surgery started bleeding, “lost so much blood and her PCV was 17. She was being transfused and started having chest pains, whch the doctors allegedly considered as a reaction to the blood transfusion. The doctors made a decision to remove the anti-shock garment garment she had on which is used to redirect blood from less important parts to vital parts of the body”.

“She was then moved to the labour ward when the doctors thought she was reacting to the blood transfusion, so they sent for a haematologist. It took an hour before she arrived. when she did, she refused to scrub in and just sat down, asking, what is the PCV?, how old is she?, you know in a nonchalant atitude. When the senior registrar asked her won’t you scrub in?, she said she would not even take off her shoes. she was wearing red shoes.
She was then transferred to the ICU where she had a cardiac arrest during surgery. Juwura is survived by her husband, two children and a host of relations.

According to UN report, one woman dies approximately every 3 minutes from child birth in Nigeria……not from poverty, hunger, disease, thirst, accidents but from pregnancy and childbirth related issues. It is a shame that our government owned hospitals are poorly funded and we hear of billions of money spent “carelessly” by politicians that were elected into offices by the county’s citizens. It is a big shame!.

As you read this story, another woman is in labour and will die because she has been denied proper health care, access to an equipped health facility and health worker. You and I may not know who the next person will be, the statistics is increasing and will  always be on the increase…. till we do something………Play your part.

Have you ever experienced Negligence in a hospital or health facility, government or private hospital?. How did you feel?
