5 NAIJA REASONS WHY MIDWIVES MATTER

Guess what! today I will be talking about midwives, because they matter!. I won’t be talking about quacks
because quacks don’t matter, but about trained and experienced midwives-BECAUSE THEY MATTER AND THEY SAVE LIVES.

Who is a Midwife?
A Midwife is a skilled professional with unique expertise in supporting women and their families through a healthy pregnancy and birth. They offer individualized care, education, counselling, and support to a woman and her infant through the entire process of birth. The midwife can refer to another health care provider for additional consultation or care, when an area of expertise is needed outside the midwifery training.

The WHO states that “Midwives are the most appropriate Public Health Centre providers to be assigned to the case of normal birth”.

Naija Reason Number One:
Unlike doctors who have to see other women in labour, A Midwife will only work one mother at a time. The midwife will accompany the mother all the through the stages of labour. The midwife will be involved all through the delivery process and is trained to recognize any sign that deviates from the normal delivery process.
My Thoughts: Having a midwife 24/? (depending on the hours of labour) at your side, will make you less worried  than a doctor, who will be about the hospital doing ward rounds and visiting other patients. The doctor might even leave you to watch a match…Arsenal vs Manchester….but a midwife will surely never leave you.

Naija Reason Number Two:
The Midwives are more knowledgeable than Doctors when it comes to breast feeding, there are more informed and practical when it comes to natural interventions such as perineal massage and are more willing to allow “nature take its course”.
My Thoughts: It is only a midwife that that will teach you how to latch a baby properly, what to do when the milk does not flow-she has her “out of the world” prescription and it has never failed her, and if you have a cut in your “under-under” hmmmm, she will tell you what to do and GBAM! your sex life comes ALIVE once again.

Naija Reason Number Three:
You will experience the beauty of a fellow woman caring for another woman. A midwife is someone that understands the aches and pains of pregnancy and child birth; She is experienced, since she has been there and she has done that.
My Thoughts: It is always nice to have someone that knows “where the shoe pinches” at your side. some you can ask “so this is how it is” and she replies “Na so devil do am oo”.

Naija Reason Number Four: A midwife is a source of endless information. She would explain every process, guide you through them. The Midwife will share stories and experiences with you and could also be a good family friend.
My Thoughts: Hmmmm she will gist you about Mama Nkechi, Mama Boy boy, She will gist you about what Mama Emeka was shouting while she was pushing her baby out. All the gossip that you have missed……you will hear….free….while you deliver your baby. and before you know it the baby is out. It is even better than buying Encomium,.and after listening to all the gist, you can make her your “family friend”. You are on your own oo.

Naija Reason Number Five: The cost is less than half of what you pay to the doctor.which makes affordable and cheaper.
My Thoughts: The Midwife is a lot cheaper, you will save a lot of money for child dedication, new clothes, Black Berry, Brazilian hair etc.

When a pregnancy is not ‘high risk’ its a lot wiser to ask a midwife to deliver your baby.

  1. Wow, now with just a few weeks to go I'm hoping I get a good midwife around me. I was at the hospital on admission for 5 days last week and had 3 ladies in my ward who had just given birth and I observed that d nurses/midwives didn't really care for them, they scolded half d time for not doing certain things right and I just felt that was wrong. I guess the thing with midwives is just to hope that u get one who's calm and nice and not some cranky lady

  3. This is good Jane. Unfortunately, the midwives are not as sweet as you made them look here. Yes, they are very necessary…especially the well trained ones, but midwiving goes beyond being well trained. It also includes having human feelings which some of them have lost. Somebody said the midwives trained at faith based nursing schools are better…maybe you'll have to conduct some research to confirm that. Overall, I do appreciate what they are doing…if only they will just add that human feeling with their professional training.

  4. Thanks for sharing. Doctors, Nurses and Midwives can be mean, no exceptions. I do hope and pray you have that nice, gentle and understanding midwife at your side. So, start praying and maybe fast too.LOL.

  6. Thank you so much for your comment. Trained midwives are needed especially in the rural areas where doctors can't reach, and of course have saved lives. Most times I think the environment they find themselves in, makes them hostile. Poor salaries, lack of equipments in health facilities (imagine delivering a baby with a candle light) and so on.There is however an urgent need to change this situation, for them to do their job better and appreciate who they are…..Life savers!
