The United Nations Secretary- General has stressed the need to provide reproductive health care for young people, as well as give them access to the necessary information and the means to protect themselves from sexual abuse and violence.
We cannot ignore the fact many young people are sexually active. A visit to the rural areas will surely leave you deaf, dumb and blind-you wouldn’t want to hear that a fifteen year old is still a virgin, you will stop speaking about how ‘good’ the village girls are when selecting a good wife and you will leave blind because you will stop seeing reasons why reproductive and sexual education should start at an early age.
Young people ARE SEXUALLY ACTIVE and they don’t care!.How do you tell a young boy to zip up and he sees provocative pictures EVERYWHERE (magazine, newspaper, music videos…….even in some churches) and how do you tell a young girl to “hold am tight o” when she needs a Black Berry, Brazilian hair and a BMW (how come they all start with the letter ‘B’).
The generation of young people is the largest, and surprisingly, this generation of young people is shaping history. Imagine if what we witness now -Rape, Maternal and Child mortality, Early marriage, HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Infections- continues……hmmmmm na Sodom and Gomorrah e go be ooo.
Abeg!, lowering the rate of HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancies and protecting children from early marriage is a collective responsibility. We assume they (young people) all have information but in reality they don’t. We need to change the course of things for us to have a better future. Passing on the right information as Individuals, Media, Parents, Peers, Maternal and Child Health advocates……we plenty o…..Doctors, Teachers and even Pastors sef!. is very important in changing the status quo.
