IWD-Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures

On the 8th of March every year around the world,we commemorate the International women’s Day. It is a day we raise awareness of the changes brought to women’s life, educate the general public on discrimination against women and celebrate women’s achievements.
The theme for IWD, 2012: Connecting Girls, Inspiring
Futures. For me, this is an interesting theme for this year in Nigeria because
around us there are so many young girls who lack self confidence and the right
connections to initiate and execute projects that bring social change, they
have ideas but they do not have the opportunity to actualize those ideas.
Also, young girls need to be guided; they need role models who they can look up to for the right information, role models who have overcome obstacles to attain leadership positions in different sectors of life.
One of the most important needs for girls is education; education represents the key to better life. School offers a gateway out of poverty and opens the doors of future employment, empowerment, better earning capacity and increased independence. Education also gives a girl the skills she needs to
make right choices in life; choices about getting married, preventing unwanted pregnancy, caring for her own health and the health of her family and planning her family .
Education is an easy way of breaking the cycle of poverty. A
girl that goes to school will likely send her own daughters to school.
As we connect girls and inspire their futures, let us
remember that girls and women have a special role to play if we are serious
about ending poverty, and if we must achieve the MDGs, we must work towards a
change in the way we view girls we must promote equality.
I will leave you with this:
“If we can fix things for mothers-and we can-we can fix so
many things that are wrong in the world. Women are at the heart of every
family, every nation. It is mostly mothers who make sure children are loved,
fed, vaccinated, and educated. You can’t build healthy, peaceful, prosperous
societies without making life better for Girls and women”(Sarah Brown, Global Patron, White Ribbon Alliance)
